I have been questioned a few times on why I am always on the lookout for fresh talent, and why don’t I just stick to my favorite model. The thing is I do shoot with my favorites often, but if my favorites are the only ones I work with them I would be unable to develop new favorites. I would have never made it as a professional fashion photographer if my clients decided to stick with their favorites. Keeping that in mind, I from time to time take on fresh modes. I would be lying if I said that was the only reason why.
My second and equally important reason is because I get comfortable working with my old models, they know what I am looking for; and I am afraid if I keep working with the same ones I would start producing the same images, no matter how different they are.
Keeping these two things in mind, I carry on my journey to search for new models from time to time. Think of it this way, there is nothing wrong with working with my favorites, but as I wish to keep on learning and evolving I have to try new methods. My favorite models are more than capable of taking on this journey with me, but I am afraid I will not be able to come out of my comfort zone. And for that reason I have to pick new models.

Picking out fresh models is never easy, it’s a challenge in itself. Where it allows me to get a fresh perspective, there are also struggles. And these struggles have pushed my limits, and that is what allows me to produce exceptional results.
There are 5 stages in my opinion, that you go through when you work with a fresh model; producing great end results means getting them all right.
Being afraid – there are so many talented models today, but picking the right one is crucial. I look at so many portfolios, but I know by now that portfolios are not enough to judge on. Which is why I have to call auditions, and stick to my gut feeling.
Taking responsibility – once I have picked the model it is entirely on me, there is no way I can blame the model or anyone else. Which is why it is wise to take complete responsibility.
Creating a story – the best way to ensure a great shoot, is to create a story. Creating a story allow you to fit with the images you are taking, and if the story flows; you have done a great job.
Trendy – you simply cannot pull of a winter trend in a summer shoot, which is why I keep myself aware of the latest trends in the industry.
Choose wisely – the last and most crucial step is to pick the right image to publish. You might have taken great shots during the shoot, but you will only be judged on this single one. So my advice is to choose wisely. I know I do.
